BRASSICA OLERACEA
        includes many of the cool weather vegetables usually planted in very early spring for late spring harvest or in late summer for fall/winter harvest: kale, broccoli, cabbage, collards, Brussels sprouts, mustard, & cauliflower.

Kale

Kale, Vates
Dark blue-green curly leaves on compact dwarf plant up to 2’ tall. Overwinters with good resistance to yellowing in cold or heat. 30 days baby, 55 days full size. B. napus OP

Kale, Red Russian
Heirloom. Gourmet variety with red-purple veins on frilly red-green leaves (cooler weather intensifies color). Unlike other kale, this is sweet flavored even before frost. Plant 12”- 16” apart. Hardy biennial.


Kale, White Russian
Green with light green stem with delicate flavor that improves after frost & with light cooking. Tolerates wet soil and cold.


Kale, Lacinato “Dinosaur”
Leaf texture resembles dinosaur skin and has a mild flavor. Harvest leaves when 1’ tall & collect lower leaves to keep plant productive. Biennial, if planted in fall it produces through winter. Hardy biennial.


Kale, Red Winter
Heirloom brought by Russian traders. Wavy-leafed plants, frost hardy with best flavor in cold weather. Plant densely in rows and harvest like lettuce. Use fresh in salads or cooked. Hardy biennial.


Kale, Ripbor
Finely curled bright green leaves with graceful hanging habit. Frost hardy, most tasty then. High in Vit. A & C, calcium, iron. Hardy biennial. F1 hybrid


COLLARDS


Collards, Green Glaze

Heirloom. Leaves with bright green sheen are good steamed or in stirfry. Upright plants resist cabbage worm and cabbage looper and withstand extremes of heat and cold. Plant 18” to 24” apart. Hardy biennial.


Collards, Champion
Dark blue-green cabbage-like leaves. Non-heading, hardy productive plants. Try braised with olive oil or steamed with butter. Plant 18” to 24” apart. Hardy biennial.


CABBAGE

Cabbage, Copenhagen Market
Medium-sized plants produce solid heads 6”-8” across. Danish heirloom. 65 days

Cabbage, Farao
Very early round green cabbage with dense core and crisp peppery-sweet leaves. 2.5-3.5 lb. heads. Suitable for dense planting, 18” apart. Winters over. F1 hybrid.


Cabbage, Red Express
Earlier red cabbage. Stores well. Heads grow to 3-4 lbs. Plant 18”-24” apart. Hardy biennial.


Cabbage, January King
Green heads 3-5 lbs. with red & burgundy markings on wrapper leaves. Very winter hardy, slow to mature. OP


Cabbage, Bilko
All-star Chinese variety with great disease resistance and large dense heads up to 20” tall, pale green outer leaves & pale yellow inner. Hardy biennial. F1 hybrid


BROCCOLI

Broccoli Romanesco
Beautiful spiraling apple-green head. Better taste & texture than finest broccoli. Likes cool temps.

Broccoli, Nutri-Bud
Vigorous 24”-plants produce 4”-6” heads over long period with moderate side shoot production. Good for spring or fall planting. OP


Broccoli, De Cicco
Light green plants of medium height produce a 3”- 6” central head and side sprouts which extend the harvest period. Use young leaves like collard greens once the head is 1/4 developed. May be planted in early spring, late summer, or early autumn. Heirloom


Broccoli, Early Green
Short season variety yields a large tight head followed by an abundance of succulent side shoots until a hard freeze. Harvest main head at its peak size, side shoots at 2”-3”.

CAULIFLOWER

Cauliflower, Purple Graffiti
Brilliant purple head, great raw or cooked. Hybrid. 80 days.

Cauliflower, Snowball Y
Smooth tight curds on deep 6”-7” heads. Dwarf plants have erect outer leaves that offer good protection and can be harvested over a long period. Recom-mended for fall crops.


Cauliflower, Veronica
Clusters of swirling chartreuse spires in fractal pattern form 7” heads, appearing to be a broccoli-cauliflower cross. Known as Italian or Romanesco cauliflower. Plant 30-36” apart. F1 hybrid.


MUSTARD


Hotshot Spicy Mustard Mix
Color, texture, and flavor diversity for salads and stirfry, includes Bau Sin, Red Giant, Arugula, Green Wave, Horned, Purple Osaka, and many more. Cut as baby leaves or harvest full sized for steaming. Plant 4”-8” inches apart.


Mizuna Mild Mustard
Vigorous & high yielding mild Japanese mustard, dark green fringed leaves with tender white stalks. Adds taste & shape variety to salads; nice steamed. Slow bolting. Brassica rapa

Long Island Brussels Sprouts Vigorous compact plant loaded with round tight dark green sprouts. Best for late fall & winter harvests as light frost improves flavor.


Tat Soi
Fast growing green, most popular as baby leaves (21 days) for salad mixes. Spoon-shaped dark green leaves with white stems. Forms tight rosette close to the ground when full size (45 days). Brassica rapa


Kohlrabi, Korist
Very early variety with flat globe shape & mild crisp white flesh. The globe resembles a root veg. Excellent cooked or raw, with texture of turnip and flavor like broccoli stem.
